The audience applause was a bit odd, but with the excellent narration, well deserved.

I recently ran into a reference to a story I read years ago by Shirley Jackson, The Lottery I remembered it to be a chilling story, disturbing even considering I was probably only about 11 at the time It s been a lot of years since then, and I was curious to go back and read the tale I remembered only as a whole town turning against the lottery winner It was for this reason I picked up this book It includes the following short stories The Night the Ghost Got In by James Thurber A short story tha [...]
The Selected Shorts series is a recorded version of the many live and radio presentations of great known and undiscovered short stories, read by people with really great story telling voices sometimes the authors themselves, but often actors This collection consisted of James Thurber s The Night the Ghost Got In read by Isaiah Sheffer Comic Mayhem is unleashed when a family hears a ghost in the night and calls in the police Edith Wharton s Roman Fever read by Maria Tucci Two women reflect on ro [...]
Really enjoyed this audio collection of classic short stories I had read three of them before, back in college Though knowing the ending takes away from the enjoyment, I still love Roman Holiday by Edith Wharton read by Maria Tucci and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson read by Marian Seldes I only had a vague memory of D.H Lawrence s Rocking Horse Winner , and John Shea did an excellent job reading it.The other three stories were new to me One of my favorites on this collection was the suspense fil [...]
I wanted to hear The Lottery read out loud so I downloaded this one from the Library to hear it It s a nice collection of short stories I got a kick out of the little old biddies being catty with each other in Roman Fever Any of you who love the little digs from Maggie Smith during tea and crumpet time on Downton Abby should definitely read that one I have also not forgotten how disgusting I felt when I read The Most Dangerous Game in school This time instead of just feeling sad about humanity I [...]
Very fun live performances of great short stories I was only familiar with the Lawrence and Jackson stories I ll definitely read a few in this series Timeless Classics includes, among others, James Thurber s The Night the Ghost Got In, read by Isaiah Sheffer Edith Wharton s Roman Fever, read by Maria Tucci Jack London s Make Westing, read by Steven Gilborn D H Lawrence s The Rocking Horse Winner, read by John Shea Shirley Jackson s The Lottery, read by Marian Seldes Richard Connell s The Most D [...]
I enjoyed this audiobook, and felt the stories were well ordered and selected That said, I m not sure the live format is for me I found myself annoyed when the audience would guffaw loudly at what I felt were dark or tense moments Perhaps I now understand why so many other people find the 37 people highlighted notes on Kindle so annoying.I had read about half of these before, but enjoyed hearing them read regardless apart from above qualms New to me was Raymond Carver s Cathedral, which may be m [...]
A well done audio presentation of very well written short stories The short story genre is one that required a deft hand to draw you in and yet conclude in a very short space of time. The stories are timeless classics just like the title boasts You will not be sorry to pick this up My only fault with this would be that each story in one track, causing at times a difficulty in finding the way back to the stopping point when you don t have that one hour time to do the entire track.
Not my favorite collection in this NPR series but some of the stories grew on me the I listened to them My favorites in this collection would have to be The Lottery by Shirley Jackson of course, one of my favorite short stories of all time The Rocking Horse Winner by D.H Lawrence The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell Cathedral by Raymond Carver
I enjoyed this very much, and it made my workouts much pleasanter A few of the storied I d heard before The Lottery, Roman Fever, and The Most Dangerous Game, all of which I love I liked the new ones as well, with the exception of the Jack London story I ve just never liked Jack London Raymond Carver s The Cathedral was great, and made me want to try of his stories.
Superb readings of wonderful American short stories I particularly liked the Edith Wharton and Raymond Carver stories.I recently read The Lottery and several other Shirley Jackson works, in honor of her centenary Hearing it read aloud as part of this collection added depth to my understanding of the story.
The middle stories were real twisted stuff Especially the lottery To have a sicko plot like that happen with not further context is just messed up I was concerned the rest were to be that way and then what would it say about American writing if these were the timeless classics But the writing was good.
I especially liked the funny ones, and Amy Tan s I listened to the stories on CD, all read by great readers actors writers, very appropriately picked Very entertaining with one or two exceptions, like Poe s Black Cat, which is just dated.
ppld James Thurber s The Night the Ghost Got In humorous , Edith Wharton s Roman Fever, Jack London s Make Westing, D.H Lawrence s The Rocking Horse Winner, Shirley Jackson s The Lottery, Richard Connell s The Most Dangerous Game, Raymond Carver s Cathedral.
I am so sad that our local NPR station no longer airs this great program All readings are expertly done Especially enjoyed Edith Wharton s Roman Fever read by Maria Tucci and Raymond Carver s Cathedral read by James Naughton.
I listened to this while driving across country It was nice to get a complete story in 20 minutes or so Clever writers
I m still thinking about The Lottery So chilling.
