Just under two hours long Caro takes the reader through the concepts of political power elected LBJ and unelected Robert Moses Moses held tremendous power in New York for over forty years by using his power and the power of others Some aspects are stained with corruption but the positive benefit to society is hard to deny Caro moved to Johnson City to research LBJ LBJ died in his sixties and that was just a few years from the start of the book He was able to interview people that grew up with LB [...]
I have enjoyed reading Robert A Caro s series of biographies of Lyndon Johnson I have yet to read his other book on Robert Moses Caro has won two Pulitzer Prizes and two National Book Awards This is an essay on the evolution and workings of political power for good and ill Caro put it together from several speeches he made recently He tells about how he and his wife work together She is the only one he trusts to do research for him.Caro tells of his decade long quest to understand how power work [...]
This turned out to be a biography of his time writing his longer books Reading about his passion for understanding political power, and in particular his thoughts on how LBJ was so effective in passing laws and what the construction of city streets have to do with power, I feel compelled to read his longer books When he got to the last words, which were about power and equality, I found myself saying aloud, Yes But, then this tiny booklet was over I definitely need to read .
Caro has done a great job of selling his books in this audio essay, adapted from a couple of speeches he has given I have been putting off reading his books because they are so huge and intimidating But after listening to Caro talk about how he came to write about two icons of power, Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson, I can t wait to start them If you haven t read his work, this is a nice place to start and get a feel for his style of writing and what motivates him If you have read his work, I ima [...]
In On Power Robert Caro offers the reader an explanation of his writing philosophy, as well as some behind the scenes stories from the writing is best known works The main tenant of his writing is the effect of political power upon the powerless In order to study the effects of this political power he knew he had to start by examining the lives of those who wielded it to find out how they got to the top of their profession In telling the story of Robert Morris he quickly realized that it lent it [...]
This was a book I bought for 1 from Audible In truth, I wasn t expecting much since I had never heard about Robert Caro, and the main reason I bought it was because I liked his voice I find it quite clear and nice to listen to in truth This experience was really similar to listening to a guest speaker at University and it wasn t boring or disappointing This is a compilation of some speeches that summarize how Mr Caro got started writing about political power, a little of what he has learned abou [...]
I confess I haven t read either of Robert Caro s reputed master projects for the simple reason that they seem too long He s gotten famous for the biography of Lyndon Johnson that seems never to end He jokes here that he s on volume five of a projected two volume work And he made his name by calling on us to rethink the role of Robert Moses in remaking New York city and state I d like to read them, especially the Moses since it touches so much on the way cities get remade and reimagined in what s [...]
For a rabid Robert Caro fan like myself, there s not much new to be found in On Power, his new book, an Audible exclusive audiobook clocking in at just under two hours It s like an extended podcast episode, with Caro riffing on the familiar theme that permeates his work many say that power corrupts, but what is true is that power reveals. Many of the anecdotes about Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson that Caro tells here are watered down versions of memorable sections of his books The personal sto [...]
Mr Caro looked back his career of biographic author in this short audiobook He explained why he chose to profile Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson in his long career Mr Caro s fans will appreciate the piece Readers who are not familiar with his work like me will find him intriguing.
Robert Caro, author of groundbreaking, monumental biographies of Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson, talks about the origins, creation, and use of political power It s short under two hours , insightful, funny, and enlightening Caro talks about his own development as a reporter, researcher, and writer, including the experience of an early, temporary job as a speechwriter of an unnamed local political boss, which changed the direction of his career early on.His views continued to grow and change as [...]
An Audible exclusive, less than 2 hours Although it has the weighty name On Power this is really a personal reminiscence by Caro of how he came to write massive biographes of Robert Moses and Lyndon Baines Johnson ongoing and what he learned upon the way He discusses how power can accomplish great good, but also cause great harm using examples he found in his research Caro is not a professional narrator he often steps back too far from the mike and has a classic NYC accent but he grows on you He [...]
Really enjoyed this short audio book narrated by Robert Caro Fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson, and into Caro s creative process and development as a writer.
Interesting background to his biography of Robert Moses Very much a New York story.
A positively enchanting vignette read by Robert Caro Perhaps the best way to describe this is as Caro s mini intellectual history He tells the story of his early days of journalism, how he came to write his great books on Robert Moses and Lyndon B Johnson, and the themes across those books that motivated him The glimpses into Caro s process and the lives and impact of both Moses and Johnson are captivating Now I can t wait to read those books, whenever I find the time and bravery to dive into 10 [...]
Good Catch Up Conversation I really like Robert Caro s work and I have gone as far as setting a Google e mail alert to let me know when there is any news concerning him.I was excited to find out about this work but from reading his books on Lyndon Johnson, I set so high of a standard, that, I was a little disappointed to find out that this work was 1 hour and 43 minutes when I expected hours of conversation. The author keeps his focus on power and how it interacts with those who have it and those [...]
Robert Caro wrote The Power Broker, a biography of Robert Moses, who builds much of the infrastructure of the New York City area He is also in the process of writing a five volume work of the life of Lyndon Johnson Both of these books are an exploration of political power and they are both fascinating Caro should have received a book award in biography for every one of the Johnson volumes, but of course, the ones who give the awards couldn t really do that At any rate, this book is a short expla [...]
Not that much to learn from this book.It s really small almost two hours of audio and looks like an abridged version of a collection of other books I m not American, so I m not part of the context or his target audience and maybe it also plays some role here. The whole thing about the electricity was a reality for my mom and for me when I visited my grandparents as a child in Brazil, it may be shocking to people living in New York nowadays but I already knew all of that in my own context The powe [...]
Robert Caro is the author behind outstanding biographies like The Power Broker and the lauded multi volume biography of US President Lyndon Johnson In this audiobook, Caro shares his story and reflects on his career As an author, it was fascinating to hear about Caro s research process and dedication to work For example, he moved from New York to Texas in order to carry out research on the LBJ biography While I liked the book overall, I felt the title On Power is somewhat misleading This is real [...]
Who is Robert Caro I asked myself Never hear of him in the Southern Hemisphere Apparently a highly awarded and acclaimed author and historian who delivers a lecture ON POWER He starts with an autobiographical recount of his early days of journalism and the power play of Robert Moses and New York infrastructure based on the edicts of this until now unbeknownst oligarch and then a synopsis of his tome on President Lyndon Johnson and the exploration of how this tri lettered leader could have rewrit [...]
Robert Caro has long been on my need to read some day list, but I think this short essay moves him to my need to read soon list Other reviewers note that it is largely a repetition of some core themes and stories from his books, which I can understand, so it s probably not essential for somebody already familiar with Caro s work But for somebody like me, who hasn t read his work before, it was a great pleasure to hear his life story as well as the brief summaries of his work It s a great intro t [...]
Robert Caro has devoted a lifetime to analyzing political power in lives of Robert Morris and Lyndon B Johnson Here, in his own voice, he shares some of those key moments Caro gives us a glimpse into the factors that motivated him to purse Morris and Johnson He lets us see some of his research and writing methodology And he provides his unique perspective on political power, how it is employed for good and ill, and consequences both intended and unintended that occur in its wake On Power is fasc [...]
Ok book about the other books Robert wrote Summary in 2 words Political Power.Does give a glimpse on the works of politics and the development done in America from the 195X onward. He mostly focus on Robert Moses, the urban planner that help develop many roads in early NY Destroyed people life and helped the powerful , and how that impacted his starting career as journalist and book writer. After he focus on Lyndon Johnson, US President, and pretty much has only good things to say about the man po [...]
I love everything the man writes, but this felt like a summary of talks he s given many times I m impatiently waiting for the final LBJ book, and this wasn t the fix I was hoping for In any case, I can t say anything Caro has to say about power is a waste of time, and I still enjoy hearing him say the same things he s said elsewhere, but there are plenty of public talks and interviews that are free and revealing than this one.
This is really a casual audio recording of an informal talk given by Caro reflecting on his career and the main theme the use of political power that is shared by his two great biographical subjects, Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson He makes many great points, but the presentation is not systematic nor does it build to anything specific Still, I enjoyed the couple hours of educational entertainment it provided.
This was a free book from Audible Actually it is a compilation of some speeches on that summarize how Caro got started writing about political power, some things he learned about politics from his work, and some the he learned about himself An interesting but very short listen I am now interested in the authors works that were described in this.
This is like reading er, listening to the cliff s notes of the cliff s notes of the cliff s notes of Caro s biographies of LBJ and Robert Moses It s a nice into to Caro s approach to work particularly the way in which his wife Ina has supported his work as his research assistant and life partner over the past four decades.
Interesting introduction to Political Power the book has two parts the first is an taste of what you can get from Caro s The Power Broker and the second is a taste of his multi volume set of books on President Lyndon B Johnson I highly recommend this book and I m looking forward to reading The Power Broker in the near future.
The author draws on his experience of researching the lives of Robert Moses and LBJ to illustrate how real political power even when it is in the hands of an influential, unelected individual controls the lives of us all Some of the examples he uses are far from what we would immediately imagine in today s day and age, but we are all still in the clutch of the power brokers.
I wasn t sure what this would be, and it turned out to just be Caro talking for a couple of hours about his writing and a few powerful people, but nothing in depth, and nothing that actually makes a book It did get me interested in his other works, but it wasn t even worth the 1.99 on Audible.Caro is a great reader though You feel like he s in the room with you and just chatting about work.
Pretty good Basically a greatest hits of the Robert Moses and Lyndon Johnson biographies including some portions I hadn t remembered , peppered with stories of Caro s life and how he ended up as a biographer Took a little over an hour to listen to at 1.5x speed.
