Often times you finish a book and wish that it weren t over or that there was a sequel This book shows that you have to be careful of what you wish for It picks up literally where the end of the first book left off. However, this book focuses on the second generation Wesley Jordache and Billy Abbott They are two sons who have been raised differently Billy, raised in private schools and with all the money but neglected by his parents Wesley, raised in semi poverty but full of love Billy chooses to [...]
This sequel to Rich Man, Poor Man is not as engaging The characters are already well developed in the first and following them through in this sequel is just not to interesting for me There were almost no other interesting characters introduced in this The only difference is that some of the main characters moved from Europe to America and it provides a bit relief from an already becoming boring plot At times, the story has the tendency to be too coincidental and I had a feeling that it was actu [...]
The sequel to Rich Man, Poor Man As sequels go this one is okay It doesn t try to duplicate the original book which is fantastic but it is of a continuation of the story There were a couple of continuity errors that the author mixed up from the TV versions of the stories and were not in his books at all Kind of took me out of the story so it loses points for that All in all not bad but we would have been fine if this was not done and all we remembered was the original book.
Second part of Rich Man, Poor Man by Irwin Shaw Next generation of Jordachs is growing up Wesley, Tom s son, after bar fight has to leave France for USA, Billy, Gretchen s son, is in the army and staying in Brussels and Enid, Rudolf s daughter the youngest Jordach.
In the first book of the series we met complex and interesting characters, who, like people in everyday life, contained positive and negative features and desires In Beggarman, Thief all is too dull, to set up, too predictable I did not like the book at all, though I read it till the last page and am glad the characters found their positive way or less It could have been a great short story, but not a full size novel, in my opinion
Sequel to Rich Man Poor Man Great book.
I read this largely forgotten novel, again, during the holiday weekend.I ve been a fan of Mr Shaw since my teens A writer of page turning quality, his prose is rhythmic, his characters well developed his plots interesting Considered one of the great masters here, appreciation for his work suffers among the literary set due to a habit of writing best sellers.Though perhaps not his best, this one is, as usual with Mr Shaw s works, better than most found elsewhere, either now or then If engrossing [...]

Eh Not my favorite The characters grew and two dimensional, and the soap opera feel really heightened in this book.
Excellent book I enjoyed it as much as the first in the duo, Rich man Poor Man.
As much as I enjoyed Rich Man Poor Man, this sequel was a big dull bore Took forever and really never connected with the story or the characters Rad RMPM and skip this one.

Beggarman, Thief isn t quite as phenomenal as the first book, Rich Man, Poor Man, but it s at least damn close, and works as a perfect sequel to the original The story picks up immediately after the events in the first book, and divides its narrative between some of the major characters from Rich Man, Poor Man, as well as the sons of two of those characters. As with the first book, it was difficult to tell where the story was headed at any given time I found some aspects of the terrorism intrigue [...]
C1977 After reading this book and the previous one, I was surprised to find out that Shaw self exiled himself to Europe when the States went through the McCarthy period He died in May 1984 and had some 72 works to his name I remember enjoying the book but I had the benefit of watching the TV adaptation of Rich Man, Poor Man which had given some life to some of the characters and incidents in the book FCN Wesley, Gretchen, Billy, Tom Jordache.
Sequel to Rich Man, Poor Man and well worth reading More of a coda to the first book than a full sequel, but I enjoyed finding out what happened to the characters Some reviewers complain that Shaw just repeated the events of the first book, but it didn t strike me that way Characters reflected on the events of the past and one of the younger generation actively seeks out stories that will bring his father to life for him So glad I re read these books.
We never read Shaw s Rich man, Poor man but enjoyed the television version back in the day That starred Nick Nolte and Peter Strauss as the Jordache brothers The family drama continues here with Beggarman, Thief and likewise should probably be made into a film for television We were thinking either AE or Lifetime Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo could portray Wesley Jordache and Billy Abbott respectively That is as soon as they re finished shooting Foxcatcher.
I enjoyed this for the skill of the writing and for the extra taste of the characters from Rich Man, Poor Man, but Shaw should have left it at us wanting Instead, he gave us and diluted some of the power of the original story.
As phenomenal as Rich Man, Poor Man was, its sequel Beggarman, Thief might be even better The story is about the aftermath of Tom Jordache s death and centers around his family Wonderfully written Shaw s style, character development, and storylines are simply beyond compare.
It s a page turner, but not nearly as good as Rich man, poor man Large parts of the book are just remembering and rephrasing what happened in the first part It s 3.5 stars, I am giving it a 4 on the strength of the first part.
I was a little disappointed in the literary quality I thought that the writing was a little bit pedestrian There were all the elements of a good story, I just thought they were handled a bit clumsily.
This is an excellent book if you ve read Irwin Shaw before who is a magnificent crafter of words , this book reads much faster and is full of action than some of his others such as Evening in Byzantium or Bread Upon Waters.
Beggarman, Thief by Irwin Shaw is the sequel to Rich Man, Poor Man, continuing the saga of Rudolph Jordache and the second generation of his family Shaw shows fully developed characters in this dramatic telling which ends on a positive note Great sequel
This was a free book outside a book store and it turned out to be much better than I expected I enjoyed it even though I hadn t read the book that came before it Rich Man, Poor Man It wasn t like I couldn t put it down, but it held my interest.
Hardback, copyright 1977 Nothing to add that hasn t already been said about this classic I had read Rich Man, Poor Man years ago, and was transfixed by the good looking Nolte in the movie I re read it before Beggarman, Thief for a double treat.
